Dear Parent(s) of WHS Freshmen:

As we prepare to move into the second semester of Freshman Health Education this month, we want to provide you with information about the Human Sexuality unit that will comprise a large portion of the curriculum.

The Human Sexuality Seminar for students in 9th grade builds upon the information provided in middle school health education, with a particular emphasis on understanding the issues that will face high school students in the area of human sexuality.  The unit is based upon the principle of “abstinence plus” wherein students are continually challenged to examine human sexuality from a perspective of an expression of personal values.  In this unit a strong message of the physical, social, and emotional benefits of postponing sexual activity is given, while also providing up-to-date and accurate information on the full range of issues relating to healthy human sexuality.  This reflects the latest research on human sexuality curricula which have demonstrated efficacy in delaying the onset of sexual activity, and reducing the risk of pregnancy and transmission of sexually transmitted infections and HIV/AIDS.  This unit is an integral component of our comprehensive Wellness Education program for the high school.  The unit consists of 7 lessons as follows:

1.     Introduction-Values & Gender Issues

2.     Sexuality, Relationships & Dating Issues

3.     Anatomy Review

4.     Abstinence/Postponement/Protective Technologies

5.     Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI’s) and HIV

6.     Reproductive Health

7.   Peer/Media Influences, Choices & Consequences

Copies of the seminar curricula will be available in the School Library for review during the school day.  Copies of all Weston Public Schools sexuality education units are also available at the Weston Public Library Reference Desk.

In order to help you become more familiar with this curriculum, we will be presenting information at the PTO meeting on Thursday, January 12th at 8:00 am in the WHS Media Forum.  Danielle Cooper, Health and Wellness Teacher, will be providing an overview of the unit along with Genevra Casias, CPNP of Newton Wellesley Pediatrics, who will address the most recent trends regarding teenage sexuality and behavior.

If for any reason you wish to exempt your child from any of this unit, please return the Student Exemption Form attached to Ms. Cooper by the specified deadline.  Students who are exempted will be given an alternative assignment to complete during the class meeting times when this unit being conducted.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to either email or call Ms. Cooper or Mr. Finnegan
