October 8, 2008 SUPERINTENDENT'S REQUEST FOR VOLUNTEERS
I am looking for volunteers to serve on two very important district wide committees. One will focus on improving communication practices and the other on identifying learning standards to support the global initiative. Both committees will have representatives from each school as well as a mix of teachers and administrators. Each will also have a parent and a student member. The communication committee may also have member of the support staff. The time commitment will be approximately two meetings a month, most likely on Monday afternoons. Once the committees are established, members will create a calendar that allows for the most efficient use of members’ time. The communication committee will be charged with identifying the most prominent communication issues and developing a plan for addressing them. Given the range of possible topics, including the new web site, home-school contact, administrator-teacher and staff information, student use of cell phones, public relations and emergency notification, it will be a challenge to identify, select and then create a plan to address the concerns. The plan will not be put into effect until 2009-2010. Based on the data that I have collected thus far for my Entry Plan, communication was cited by most groups as being in need of improvement. The first meeting of this committee will be on November 3rd from 3:00-4:00PM at Case House.
The committee working on the global initiative will be charged with drafting learning standards and essential questions that will articulate a strand of global education through our preK-12 curriculum, with an emphasis on critical thinking skills. These standards and essential questions will link and strengthen what currently exists in our curriculum to support global education, including units in various disciplines, student and faculty travel, and special programs. The committee will also investigate and then be mindful of what students will need in the future to prepare them to live and work in a global society. The first meeting of the global initiative committee will take place on Wednesday, October 22nd from 3:00-4:00 at Case House.
If you wish to volunteer to serve on one of these committees, please email that request to Janet Bohlin by October 17th (bohlinj@mail.weston.org). Should you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact me by email or telephone.
Thank you. Cheryl R. Maloney, Superintendent 781-529-8080 |
