Your Inner Fish: A Journey into the 3.5-Billion-Year History of the Human Body
by Neil Shubin.

Homework Preparation: Be ready to go on the first day.

I.  BE AN EXPERT ON A BODY PART: ASSIGNED by the first letter of your last name.

1. Arms – (A-D)
2. Teeth – (E-H)
3. Head – (I-L)
4. Body- (M-P)
5. Ears – (Q-T)
6. Eyes – (U-Z)

1.  Use the book to give important evolutionary evidence about the body structures assigned that connect humans with other animals – or organisms.  Each structure will have more or less information about each topic.

Fossil evidence:
* DNA evidence:
* Embryo evidence:
* Biochemical/molecular:

2.  What is a personal insight you have about your body after reading the book?

3.  What is an interesting quote you highlighted while you were reading the book?

4.  What couldn’t you understand while reading but want to learn more about so you can understand?

II. CHOOSE A QUOTE TO SUPPORT WITH EVIDENCE ABOUT YOUR BODY STRUCTURE:
1. “When you see these deep similarities among different organs and bodies, you begin to recognize that the diverse inhabitants of our world are just variations on a theme” pg 80

2. “One of the joys of science is that, on occasion, we see a pattern that reveals the order in what initially seems chaotic.”  Pg 82

3. “Organs can come about for one function only to be repurposed over time.” Pg 170

Assignment to be ready on the first full day of class: Use the information from Your Inner Fish to present an INFORMATIVE 5 minute power point presentation to the rest of the class that gives the evolutionary connections for the body structure you are assigned.  Your group will decide the one power point that best presents the information; note: EACH person should have one ready to share, first with your group.  The power point selected by the group gets the highest grade.
