Ace Program ACE Locker

The WEEFC- funded Academic Coaching Empowerment (ACE) program (formerly the Organizational Academy) for 6th graders is entering its 4th year. The program's scope has broadened not only to address the organizational challenges faced by many students during the transition to Middle School but, more generally, to improve the overall academic performance of all students. ACE helps students develop life-long skills that will enable them to excel both inside and outside the classroom. Some of the topics covered include locker organization, effective binder use, establishing homework routines, class note taking, problem solving, memorization techniques, test taking strategies and developing study skills.

Since its inception, this program has helped hundreds of students struggling with organizational and academic challenges. Sessions are open to all 6th graders, and drop-ins are welcome.

Facing History and Ourselves

 7th Grade Faculty Prof Dev

WEEFC funding enabled the 7th grade faculty to attend a professional development workshop, entitled Facing History and Ourselves, which is designed to guide educators in enhancing social competency curriculum. The eleven teachers who received training this summer have begun integrating Facing History's mission of helping children become thoughtful and ethical citizens, both inside and outside the classroom. The goal is to create a student body that is reflective and principled when it comes to making the challenging choices of adolescence.

A 7th Grade English Teacher shared the following:
"The Facing History workshop was by far the most effective professional development (program) I have experienced... In two days I feel I gained a tremendous amount... actually much more than some entire graduate school courses I have taken... The lessons were applicable, well thought out, and reflective of the teaching styles they promote... I highly recommend that Weston maintain its relationship with Facing History and Ourselves. Doing so will surely improve our teaching and thus kids' learning."

WEEFC is thrilled to have played a part in this meaningful experience that is touching the lives of many passionate educators and the hundreds of students with whom they connect every day.

Lab Equipment

The addition of WEEFC-funded technology completed the conversion of the Video Lab into a "21st Century Classroom". This state-of-the-art video lab provides the means for all 8th grade students to push their limits on imagination and creativity and enables them to produce sophisticated multi-media projects for many different subjects. New cameras, sound-enhancing technology and a green screen afford students a wide range of options for experimentation and exploration of all aspects of video production. Students benefit from the opportunity to work collaboratively on many projects, and some of their productions include news segments, public service announcements, short films exploring different genres, and bilingual narratives. Students have enthusiastically embraced this unique opportunity to work with such sophisticated technology.
