New School Year

To help the students get comfortable about the new school year, a transition document has been created that previews the layout of the school and introduces some of the staff. Thanks to Carly Vernon, Penny Peddie and Kimberly Costello for gathering and publishing the guide.

School Culture

ct-wide practices used to promote student social competencies that mitigate bullying behavior.
A generally accepted definition of bullying is an “aggressive behavior that is intentional, repeated over time, and involves an imbalance of power or strength. A child who is being bullied has a hard time defending himself or herself.”  (www.stopbullyingnow.hrsa.gov) Bullying can take many forms, including physical, verbal, emotional, or via electronic media.

At the Field School, as in all the Weston schools, we know that children learn best when they are emotionally prepared to engage the content. To meet this goal, we have developed and maintain a thorough curriculum which builds on the work begun at Country and Woodland. The tenets of the curriculum also dovetail with the RALI program of the Middle School. The primary components of the Field School program are:
  • open and regular discussion with parents,
  • development of meaningful and personal relationships with students
  • and the use of materials, presentations and protocols to reinforce positive behaviors.

At the Field School your child will experience:
  • Opportunities to participate in snack and lunch groups. These groups are designed to allow students to discuss issues and concerns with their classmates and moderated by our school counselor.
  • Regular class-wide meetings using the Open Circle protocols which reinforce Social Competency Skills (when to tell an adult, dealing with teasing, speaking up, social problem solving, etc). The majority of our faculty regularly uses the curriculum to address the needs of the students.
  • Visits to the classroom by Janine Halloran, the school counselor, and me to explicitly discuss the issue of bullying as well as conversations about making good choices.
  • Presentations from outside performers and speakers dealing with bullying and the roles the bully, the victim and the bystander play. In February, the “Power of One” was presented and was well received by the students.
  • New initiatives including the “Kindness Wall of Fame” to reinforce the ideals that promote a positive school culture and a love for learning.
  • Enrollment in a Principal Leadership Corp activity. The activities are derived from student passions and focus on making a positive and empathetic impact on others.
  • A code of discipline that is based on restitution, resolution, reconciliation.
  • An environment where, “all students are known” as discrete learners and people.
But central to all our efforts is a solid and open relationship between home and school.  We will stay vigilant here at Field but, if you know of a situation where you feel a child is being bullied or if your child is acting as the bully, please don’t assume we know about it, too.  Contact your child’s teacher, Ms. Halloran, or me.  Also, monitor your child’s use of electronic media, participation in youth sports, or external clubs and let us know if something is happening outside of school that is making you or your child feel uncomfortable.

We look forward to continuing to work with you to ensure a positive school environment is maintained so that all our students can thrive.

Be True to Your School and Support the Haiti Relief Effort

The Field School Student Government, through the sale of Field School t-shirts, raised $850 to support the people affected by the recent earthquake in Haiti. All proceeds will be donated to the American Red Cross.

Field School is....

The Field School houses the district's approximately 400 fourth and fifth grade students. The grades are organized into a "team" system, with teachers in each grade working collaboratively on curriculum, instruction, and organizational matters.  This arrangement allows for the staff to focus on the educational, emotional, and development needs of our children.  Outside of the rigorous standards-based classroom curriculum, the students also take part in weekly exposure to specials including art, music, physical education, Spanish, and library.

If you need a school document translated into a different language, please make a request in the Main Office. Field School hours are 8:00 A.M. - 2:20 P.M.
