Grade 4 Curriculum
Reading: Reading strategies are reviewed and reinforced in a variety of ways. Instructional methods include guided reading lessons, literature circles, author studies, and genre studies. Students are expected to identify, analyze, and provide evidence from the texts to make connections and support their thinking. Students will demonstrate their understanding of texts and their achievement as readers by reading 25 grade appropriate books throughout the year.
Writing Process: This ongoing experience includes all facets of the writing process: Prewriting, Drafting, Sharing, Revising, Editing and Publishing. Students will write for various audiences and purposes. The main focus of the fourth grade program is personal narrative writing. Students will develop skills necessary to write with focus and detail by deepening their understanding of organization and figurative language.
Spelling: Students work with assigned spelling lists. Each lesson reinforces word structure, patterns, vocabulary expansion, and dictionary and proofreading skills.
Math: The units taught in fourth grade include geometry, place value, addition and subtraction, multiplication, division, measurement, fractions, decimals, and data, statistics and probability. These units introduce new concepts and skills while building on concepts and skills covered in earlier grades. Students learn to use multiple strategies when solving math problems. A strong focus in the fourth grade is for students to learn to explain their mathematical thinking.
Science: The scientific method is introduced through a series of inquiry-based lessons. Additionally, fourth graders study Rocks and Minerals, Properties of Water, and Structures of Life. In each of these science units, the concept of “cycles” is explored.
Social Studies: Students use the five themes of geography to learn about each of the regions of the United States, as well as Canada. Students are also exposed to the role of immigration in the settlement of the United States.

Grade 4 Homework: The goal of homework is to develop time management skills, independent work skills and responsibility. Each night, Field School students should expect:
30 minutes of independent reading
up to 30 minutes of math homework
up to 30 minutes of “homeroom” homework
