Highlights of Spring in Kindergarten include our Spring Visit to Land’s Sake Farm, Looking At Art, Woodland School Art Day, Summer Fun Day, a visit to First Grade and two visits from Drumlin Farm, Hatching Out, and Pond Life. We observe the lifecycle of a butterfly and a frog in the classrooms.
Kindergarten Curriculum –
Language: Children maintain eye contact while listening; listen to others with intent to understand; respond to a speaker by asking questions/contributing ideas; retell stories, information and ideas; make predictions; follow one, two and three step directions.
Literature: Children are exposed to contemporary and traditional stories, non-fiction, folktales, nursery rhymes, songs and poetry.
Literacy: Children engage in letter names and sounds activities, shared reading experiences that focus on concepts of print and interactive writing activities.
Writing: Children participate in Writer’s and Illustrator’s Workshop. During the year children begin by writing wordless books. Children then begin to label their pictures. As the year progresses children become more independent as writers. Their writing includes temporary spelling and words found in print in the environment.
Math: Children participate in lessons from Investigations in Number, Data, and Space. Units include: Classroom Routines, Patterns, Collecting, Counting and Measuring, Counting Ourselves and Others, How Many in All? and Making Shapes and Building Blocks.
Motor: Children participate in activities that develop ability to maintain stable posture; sense of personal space; mature grip of writing implements; efficient movement through school/classroom environment; and ability to cut on lines and curves.
Science: Children engage in units on Observing, Recording, Classifying, Predicting, Seasonal Change at Land’s Sake Farm, Balls and Ramps and Life Cycles of the Frog and Butterfly.
Social Studies: Children participate in lessons focusing on Social Competency including safety, sharing ideas and materials, taking turns, taking responsibility for jobs/actions, following routines independently, respect individual differences, working cooperatively with a partner and resolving conflict with negotiation.
