Outstanding weekend of team and personal accomplishments for Weston Athletics
The weekend of February 14, 2014, began with Wrestling bringing home a 1st (Peter Martinkus 113 -State Sectional Champion) two 2nds, a 3rd, 4th and two 6th's at the Sectional State Tournament held at Wayland HS. This collection of top finishers will move onto the State Finals next Saturday at Foxboro HS. This is the largest group of wrestlers moving on to the State Championships in many years.
Saturday also saw our Girls Swim/Dive team compete in the State Championships at MIT. The team brought home hardware with a State Runer-Up finish that proved hard work and determination can go a long way. Individual State Champions Victoria Bryson (50 Free) and Mikaela Thompson (Diving back to back years) and a many personal best by a number of swimmers edged out both North Hampton and Marblehead for the second spot behind Wayland HS.
Sunday began with both the boys and girls Indoor Track teams competing in the tremendously competitive Division 4 State Championships at the Reggie Lewis Center. Although neither team finished in the top two spots both had Individual State Champions. Freshman Jillian Howard won the 1000 meter run, Junior Collins Ebozue won the 55 hurdles and Senior Jeff Mallard won the long jump. Great day for indoor track.
The day ended with a Sate Championship!!! Coach Valle likened this team to the 2013 Red Sox. A group of young men without expectations that came together as a team, overachieved during the regular season, then turned up the engines at the end of the year to bring home a State Championship (third in a row). Unbelievable...... Sam Cekala brought home the Individual State Championship in the 50 free then it was a workmanlike performance from each and every member of the team placing throughout each event to accumulate more points than highly regarded and early meet front-runner Bishop Feehan.
