Student Assessments & MCAS

Weston conducts the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS), as required by state and federal law.  High School students preparing to attend college may take the College Board's Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT), the American College Testing Company (ACT) test and/or College Board's Advanced Placement (AP) examinations.  In addition, students may opt to take the College Board's Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT) in preparation for the SAT and to qualify for the National Merit Scholarship (NMSQT).  Finallly, students may prepare for the ACT by taking the PLAN.

Dear Families of Students in Grades 3-8,

Over the next few months, students in Grades 3-8, will participate in the newest version of the state assessment, MCAS 2.0. Based upon the “legacy” MCAS and similar in format to PARCC, MCAS 2.0 will be administered on computers and will be designed to assess the Massachusetts learning standards.

Some notes about the administration of MCAS 2.0:

  • We will continue to administer this assessment on computers in all grades. It is required that students in grades 4 and 8 are on computer across the state, and the reason is because other districts need to phase in the required support necessary for computer-based testing. In Weston, we are well supported.
  • MCAS 2.0 assesses English Language Arts (ELA) and Math, only. Science assessments are as they have been in the past, on paper and based upon “legacy” MCAS.
  • Unlike PARCC, MCAS 2.0 is UNTIMED. Students will have access to the time they need to complete the assessment.
  • Like PARCC, there are universal accessibility features available to all students. These include clarifying general test administration directions, a highlighter tool, a flag/bookmark, a magnifier tool, among others. Principals are also able add certain other accessibility features as needed.
  • Accommodations to test administration/response as defined on a student’s Individual Education Plan (IEP) or 504 Plan are available.
  • MCAS 2.0 data will continue to help us in our quest to identify, measure, and address gaps, between all students and our underperforming subgroups and between science and the other content areas.

The dates for Weston’s MCAS 2.0 test administration are as follows:
