Please join us in congratulating the math team on a successful Purple Comet Math Meet!

Team “Believe in Steve” answered 22 of 30 problems correctly and placed 16th in the country and 4th in the state in their division (high schools with fewer than 1200 students). This team consisted of Kenz K., Steven W., Zixuan H., Jackie A., Jeff L., and Joanne L.

Team “Big Eight” answered 17 of 30 problems correctly and placed 34th in the country and 6th in the state in that same division. Team members were freshmen Josh L., Andrew Y., Ezra G., Adi S., David H., and Albert W.

Finally, “Gorrabit”, a team composed of 7th through 9th graders from both the middle and high schools, solved 13 of the problems correctly, placing 30th in the country and 1st in Massachusetts among teams composed of students from more than one school. Team members were Ben C., Neil M., and Bryant Z. from the middle school and John L., Ben G., and Ezra O. from the high school.

A huge congratulations to freshman Andrew Yao and senior Kenz Kallal on each making the top 10 in the state on the Massachusetts Mathematics Olympiad!  Of the thousands of public and private school students that competed in the level one contest, only 100 were invited to compete in the second round of competition.  Weston had 5 students make the top 100 and go on to Sun Life in Wellesley to do three hours of math, most of it formal mathematical proof.

Having two students from Weston make the top 10 is an amazing accomplishment!

Please congratulate our mathletes on their outstanding showing at the Massachusetts State Playoffs on Apriil 3, 2017. The WHS “varsity” Math Team finished second in the entire state in the medium-sized schools division! We even beat Canton, which is a rare occurrence. As we’re allowed to take only six students to States, it was fortunate that our six strongest mathletes were able to participate: Ezra Gordon, Kenz Kallal, Josh Li, Sasha Shashkov, Steven Wang, and Andrew Yao. All did well, and Andrew earned a perfect score! Since three of the six are freshmen.

Stay tuned for New Englands at the end of the month.

By way of comparison, here are the scores of the top eight medium schools:

101                  Sharon
94                    Weston
                 88                    Deerfield Academy
86                    Canton
82                    St. Johns
66                    Westboro
62                    Bedford
59                    Wayland

Please congratulate the students on the Weston High School Math Team for their excellent performance (133 points) at the third MML meet of the season yesterday at A–B. Halfway through the season, Weston is now in second place (but just barely out of first) among medium-sized high schools in Massachusetts. Cumulative scores at this point are 444 for Canton, 433 for Weston, 284 for Bedford, and on down from there. Although we are not competing directly against large schools, we are also ahead of a number of them, such as C-C with 159, L-S with 228 points, and even Winchester with 429.

Three team members won virtual medals (14 points or higher) at yesterday’s meet: a bronze for senior co-captain Steven Wang (14 points), silver for freshman Ezra Gordon (16), and a gold for freshman Andrew Yao (a perfect 18).

Six members of the Weston High School math team were invited to participate in the Harvard MIT Math Tournament (HMMT) on Saturday. This international competition is one of the most demanding in the U.S. It includes almost a thousand contestants on 150 teams, mostly from the U.S. and China, with a sprinkling from other countries. (Yes, quite a few teams travel halfway around the world, coming from Shanghai, Beijing, Macao, etc., in order to participate) Anyway, we sent six freshmen to compete in this ten-hour event at Harvard, and will be sending another six students (not just freshmen) to the February HMMT tournament, which will be held at MIT.

One of our freshmen, Andrew Yao, scored first in the U.S. and fourth in the world in his overall score, finishing a mere hundredth of a point out of third place!  He also finished third in the world in his “General Math” round. Please congratulate him on this outstanding achievement.

The team as a whole finished in a very respectable 39th place overall, and an even more respectable 29th in the “Guts Round,” which is a somewhat unusual closely timed combination of math and track. (After each problem, a team member has to sprint up and down a flight of stairs in order to turn in the team’s answer, pick up the next problem, and bring it back to the team.) All the events included problems from a wide range of high-school math, and remember that our team consisted entirely of freshmen! What score will they achieve three years from now? Stay tuned…

When you see members of the Weston High School Math Team, please congratulate them for their outstanding performance at the second MML meet of the season. A team total of 100 points is a good score at a meet, and 125 points is excellent. Yesterday our team scored 138, thereby remaining in first place among medium-sized high schools in Massachusetts. Cumulative scores at this point (one third of the way through the season) are 300 for Weston, 297 for Canton, and on down from there. We even surpassed a number of large schools, such as C-C with 159, L-S with 161 points, and even Winchester with 286.

Eight team members were winners of virtual medals (14 points or higher):

Scoring 14 points each were senior Zixuan Huang, senior Sam Tang, freshman Andrew Yao, and freshman Josh Li.

Scoring 16 points each were senior co-captain Kenz Kallal and sophomore Jeff Liu.

And scoring 18 points each (a perfect score) were freshmen Ezra Gordon and senior co-captain Steven Wang!

Please congratulate the students on the Weston High School Math Team for their outstanding performance at the first MML meet of the season. A team total of 100 points is a good score at a meet, and 125 points is excellent. Yesterday our team scored 159, the highest ever for Weston in the 20 years that we’ve been keeping records!

This awesome result wasn’t, and couldn’t have been, the achievement of one or two individuals. It was very much a team effort. Winners of virtual medals (14 points or higher) were as follows:

Scoring 14 points each were senior co-captain Kenz Kallal, senior co-captain

Steven Wang, senior Zixuan Huang, and freshman Alex Ding.

Scoring 16 points each were sophomore Sasha Shashkov, freshman David Huang, and freshman Adi Saligrama.

And scoring 18 points each (a perfect score) were three freshmen: Ezra Gordon, Josh Li, and Andrew Yao!

Mission/Goals

The Weston High Math Team competes in two leagues. As a member of the Massachusetts Math League, Weston sends a 10-member team to monthly competitions; at least two members of the team must be sophomores or freshmen. Strong teams may be invited to compete in state or New England championships. As a member of the New England Math League, the team participates in written competitions at Weston High School. The team's weekly practices offer students an opportunity to strengthen and expand their math skills.
