2012-13 Science Team Continues Strong Performance in State Meet
Saturday, March 23, 2013

Weston placed 6th out of 44 teams in the state!  Congratulations to:
Alisha Ukani, Andrew Li, Brian Yue, James Joutras, Jason Bui, Jason Schwartz, Jin Byun, Joanna Tao, John Jansen, Jonathan DelGizzi, Joseph Picard, Jun Byun, Pravina Samaratunga, Srishti Lulla, William Kretschmer, & Zarina Nip.

This was truly a team effort as  students compete in 25 events working as pairs of a range of topics—everything from forestry knowledge to physics. They also have to build and practice with devices of their own construction. Scores from each event were then ranked and assigned point values, the point values then combined to give our overall score and rank as sixth.  Special recognition goes to all the first-timers we had this year--who really worked hard and placed very well in difficult events.

We had a number of students place in the top ten in their particular event.

Robot Arm placed 6th in the state--Joey Picard & James Joutras.    Watch our Robort Arm
Gravity Vehicle placed 6th--Brian Yue & Jason Schwartz.               Watch the Gravity Vehicle
MagLev placed 2nd--Brian Yue & Jason Schwartz

Circuit Lab placed 2nd--Brian Yue
Endangered Exotics placed 7th-- Pravina Samaratunga & Joanna Tao
Fermi Questions placed 6th--Brian Yue and William Kretschmer
Material Science placed 4th--Brian Yue & Jason Schwartz
Physics Lab placed 6th--Pravina Samaratunga & Andrew Li
Thermodynamics placed 7th--Brian Yue & Jin Byun
Water Quality placed 7th--Pravina Samaratunga & Srishti Lulla

Congratulations to the Science Team for a strong showing at theState Meet!

Pravina Samaratunga, Branndon Chen, Edward Kwiatkowski, Brian Yue, Jason Schwartz, William Kretschmer, Jin Byun, Jun Byun, Grace Huckins, and Dan Lang.

The following pairs of students placed in the top ten for their  specific event:
Thermodynamics (1st place)= Brian Yue + Edward Kwiatkowski
Gravity Vehicle Building Event (1st place)= Brian Yue + Dan Lang ---> see video
Mystery Engineering (1st place)= Brian Yue + Jason Schwartz
Optics (2nd place) = William  Kretschmer
Microbe Mission (4th place)= Grace Huckins + Pravina Samaratunga
Write it do it (4th place)= Jason Schwartz + William Kretschmer
Water Quality (6th place) = Grace Huckins
Tower Building Event (7th)= Brian Yue + Dan Lang
Quantum Quandries (8th)= Grace Huckins + Branndon Chen
Dynamic Planet (8th place) = Grace Huckins and Jun Byun
Technical Problem Solving (8th place)= William Kretschmer + Jin Byun
Circuit Lab (9th place) = Brian Yue + Dan Lang
Fermi Questions (9th)= Pravina Samaratunga + William Kretschmer

Students have diligently trained for the event by participating at monthly meets in our division, the West Suburban Science League.   In our division we placed 5th overall.  At the state competition the top three schools came from our division, so we were able to practice against some of the best.

PTO Family Fun Science Night

The High School Science Team demonstrated basic scientific principles to K-5 students and provide hands-on activities for everyone at the PTO Family Fun Science Night on Friday, February 26, 2010. The team led the young scientists in making soda and using an intricate pulley system. Parents had as much fun as the kids!

This event took place in the Field School gymnasium and was sponsored by the PTO Science and Math Council; and it was funded by WEEFC.

Mission/Goals: The Science Team gives Weston High students the opportunity to meet with and compete against students from the 14 area high schools that comprise the West Suburban Science League. Each of the 5 League competitions gives students the opportunity to put their interest in science to work doing activities related to biology, chemistry, and physics. The Science Team season culminates with the State Science Olympiad in March.
