VI. Student Support Resources

Health Services
The School Nurse is available for confidential consultation, emergency treatment and case management
during all hours that school is in session. Communication and collaboration with families, faculty and the
entire school community allow us to maximize each student’s learning experience.

The Health Services adheres to the immunization and other requirements of the Massachusetts Department
of Public Health for all current and entering students. We also follow the regulations of the Massachusetts
Interscholastic Athletic Association for those wishing to participate in any WHS athletic program.

In co-ordination with the Physical Education Department, School Nurses will conduct state-mandated health
screenings. All medications and treatments are to be administered through and monitored by the School
Nurse. Dismissals from school due to illness or injury must be through the Nurse’s Office and dismissal will
only be to a parent, guardian or designated emergency contact. In the event of an extended absence of the
parent/guardian, written permission for health directives and dismissal must be on file in the Nurse’s Office.

Any student returning to school following a contagious disease, surgery or who is using an assistive device,
must be re-admitted to school by the Nurse. Health care provider documentation is required for absences
and questions regarding medical exemptions to the school attendance policy and may be directed to the
School Nurse. A medical absence of 14 consecutive days or longer will qualify for home or hospital tutoring.
The School Nurse or Guidance Counselor can provide further information.

Students who wish to be excused from Physical Education classes for a medical reason must see the School
Nurse to obtain an excuse. However, if the condition will require more than one week’s absence, a medical
note will be necessary stating the diagnosis and length of time the student is to be exempt from class
participation.

Students will not be admitted to the Nurse’s Office during class times without a pass from a staff member. To
avoid disturbing those who are ill or resting, other students are to leave the area once their needs have been
met.  The Nurse's Office is closed daily from 12-12:30, except for emergencies.

Food Allergy Guidelines

In accordance with the Weston Public Schools Food Allergy Policy, Weston High School has adopted the following guidelines to minimize the risk of exposure to allergens that may pose a threat to students, educate all members of the school community in regards to life-threatening food allergies and plan for the individual needs of students and employees with such conditions.  Our goal is to assist students in assuming more individual responsibility for their health and safety as they grow older and to optimize full participation in education and school-sponsored activities.

Family Responsibility

• Notify school/school nurse of child’s allergies
• Develop a prevention plan with school nurse to accommodate child’s needs throughout the school day, including classrooms, cafeteria and school bus. Develop Emergency Food Allergy Action Plan
• Provide written medical documentation, instructions and medications as directed by the physician, using the Food Allergy Action Plan as a guide. Include a photo of your child on the form.
• Provide properly labeled medications and replace them when expired.
• If mutually agreed upon by the parent/guardian, physician and school nurse, the student may carry their own Epi-Pen and emergency supplies. However, the medical documentation and Emergency Food Allergy Action must be completed and kept on file in the Nurses’ Office, as noted above.
• Provide and update emergency contact information
• Educate your child in self-management of their food allergy appropriate to their developmental level. Include:

1. Safe/unsafe foods
2. Strategies for avoiding exposure to unsafe foods
3. Symptoms of an allergic reaction
4. How and when to tell an adult they may be having an allergy-related problem
5. Reading food labels

School Responsibility

• Annual Bus Driver Training about food allergies, symptoms of an allergic reaction and administration of Epi-Pen
• Staff education by the school nurse about food allergies, including recognition of allergic reaction symptoms and how to administer an Epi-Pen
• Prevention plan developed by school nurse with parent/guardian that accommodates child’s needs throughout the school day, including classrooms, cafeteria and school bus. Develop Emergency Food Allergy Action Plan
• Plan shared, as appropriate, with teachers and support staff
• No peanut butter or nut sales in the school cafeterias
• No food in classrooms or unwrapped food in the halls
• Bake sales or any sale of competitive food and beverages are not allowed during the school day and the 30 minute period directly prior to and following the school day
• Food is permitted in designated areas (offices, conference rooms, Media Center, Family/Consumer Science room) provided surfaces are cleaned after use and hands washed before returning to classrooms

Student Responsibility

• Do not trade food with others
• Do not eat anything with unknown ingredients or known to contain allergen(s)
• Be prepared to advocate for yourself, describe your allergies and identify key foods containing allergens; dependent on developmental level
• Notify an adult if they eat something they believe may contain food to which they are allergic
• If carrying own Epi-Pen and emergency supplies, be sure they are properly labeled, secure and not shared with others. Be able to direct an adult to their location if needed

Guidance Services
Students work with their guidance counselor from the beginning of freshman year through graduation.
Throughout all four years, guidance counselors help students in a variety of areas including course selection,
academic management, crisis interventions, and college and post-graduation options. Students and parents
can make appointments to see their counselor at any time, or can communicate through email and the
telephone. In addition, the Guidance Department maintains a web page which can be found at
http://www.weston.org/schools/hs/guid. This is a great resource for information on all the above issues
that can arise during the course of the school year. Please feel free to call or email with questions.

Library/Media Center
The Library/Media Center is open Monday through Friday from 7:15 am to 3:30 pm. The staff includes a
certified librarian and two assistant librarians.

Students may use the Library and adjoining computer lab for class research and quiet study during their
unassigned blocks and lunch. Study hall students may use the Library with written permission (research
pass) from their study hall teacher, may stay for thirty minutes, and then return to study hall. Academic
classes accompanied by the teacher usually sign up for half block library time.

There is an electronic Acceptable Use Policy in effect that describes proper computer use and the
consequences of improper use. Any student who causes a disturbance or who disobeys
library rules is subject to disciplinary action. Access to the Library/Media Center may be restricted if a
student mistreats, damages or destroys materials or furniture. Food and drink are not allowed in the
Library/Media Center.

Most academic textbooks are available for use in the Library. Projection equipment, laptops, boom boxes,
headphones and slide projectors may be borrowed for class presentations.

Many books assigned for class reading are available for free iPod/MP3 downloads. A list of available
downloads may be found on the library web page.

Books, videos, and DVDs circulate for three weeks. Saturday School will be assigned to students who fail to
return materials after receiving three overdue notices. Reference materials and reserve books may be
borrowed overnight, and must be returned the next morning by 9:00 a.m. or a fine of $5.00 per day is
incurred. Seniors must return all borrowed materials before leaving for internships. Lost books must be paid
for before the end of the school year. Money will be returned if the book is found.

Peer Mediation
Peer Mediation is a conflict resolution process that uses trained students to assist fellow students in settling
their disputes. With the Peer Mediation Program, conflicts between students are not resolved by teachers or
administrators, but by the students themselves. The program encourages student responsibility and,
consequently, improves the school climate. This program is under the direction of Guidance Counselors
Mrs. Maryann Shea and Mrs. Gretchen Gugliotta.
